April 2021 Newsletter


Hi GymBeat Family,


It's April, and we're midway through the spring season! We've got some exciting results to share with you from some of our team's competitions. Along with that, we have a Sydney Weakley Scholarship recipient, our coach of the month, and two amazing athletes of the month to share! So, without further ado, enjoy!


Coach of the Month

Michael Avila-Beach

Coach Michael has been with our gym since the beginning of 2020 and loves his job! He has been in the cheer coaching field for over 15 years! He also loves to teach dance on top of working for the Visalia Unified school district coaching cheer. Michael is a man of many talents! If he is not working, he’s always trying to learn something new. He is very passionate about his job as a coach here at Gymnastics Beat and Pyramid Athletics Cheer. He also enjoys teaching and passing down his knowledge to the next generation of kids! He exclaims: “I love seeing their faces light up when they get a new skill!” Thank you coach Michael for an awesome job!

Athletes of the Month

Kassandra Aquino

Kassandra is 7 years old and is in 1st grade. She is taking gymnastics level 1a with her coach Ethan. She enjoys all aspects of the gym especially doing cartwheels! Kassandra would like to continue doing gymnastics, learn newer skills and cool moves until high school, where she may compete one day. Her other hobbies include swimming and drawing and her favorite food is Mac and Cheese! Kassandra has two pet dogs named Oreo and Wybie. Coach Ethan is very proud of Kassandra and says “She really listens well and always wants to learn more!” Good job Kassandra, keep up the training!

Rilynn Lopez

Rilynn was selected by her coach Daryl as this month’s Athlete of the Month! She is 9 years old and is in 3rd grade. She is taking gymnastics level 1b and just loves to master the uneven bars! In fact, Rilynn’s goals are to train and level up to doing backflips on the floor and flips off the bars! To become a well-qualified gymnast and start competing one day is only one of her goals. Her other interests include arts & crafts, drawing, painting, and baking. Rilynn doesn’t have any pets right now, but according to mom, “When I’m older and can take responsible care of pets, maybe then I can start!” Rilynn’s favorite foods are pepperoni pizza and spaghetti! YUM!

Sam's Corner

It’s now the end of competition season! I wish to thank our Junior Olympic and Xcel gymnastics teams for a job well done! And a great season for our Pyramid Athletics Cheer teams for continuing to show what it means to be crowned: Champions! For now, let us get back to near normal! By that, I mean we keep seeing improvements all over our city, state, and country of covid cases so that we can finally get back to the things we love to do and places we want to be! We hope by the beginning of summer or June 1st, we will have parents come back inside the gym with masks for now. You all have been very patient with this whole thing and we will welcome you back with open arms!

  • Venizia Valdez - 1st on floor (state champion), 5th on vault, 6th on bars, 6th all-around.

  • Margarita Martinez – 1st on bars (state champion), 4th on beam.

  • Demi Gonzales - 2nd on bars, 5th on vault & floor, 4th all-around.

  • Olivia Lopez - 4th on vault & bars.

  • Gabby Cummings - 4th on vault & bars, 5th on beam, 6th all-around.

  • Jenna McKenry - 6th on beam.

  • Makayla Daugherty - 1st on vault (state champion), 2nd on bars, 4th on floor.

Sydney Weakley Scholarship Recipient

Chase Hatch

Congratulations to Chase Hatch for being selected as the recipient of the Sydney Weakley annual scholarship from The Fun of Fit, our non-profit arm at GymBeat. The Weakley family selected Chase among many applicants, but due to the Covid pandemic last year in March, we closed the gym and were not able to get together and take pictures. Now one year later, we finally got our wish and honored the memory of our beloved coach Sydney Weakley, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident on January 1st, 2017. Ever since that day, and every year thereafter, we announce a new round of applications near autumn, so by January 1st, the Weakley family can choose a student or athlete that can use scholarship funding towards the sport they love so much, just like our dear Sydney did.

Recipe of the Month

3-Way Summer Smoothie Bowls

Recipe by Crowded Kitchen

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup frozen raspberries

  • 1 cup frozen strawberries

  • 1 cup frozen cherries

  • ½ tbsp beet powder

  • 4 oz tart cherry juice

  • ¼ cup hemp seeds

  • 1 tbsp maple syrup

  • ½ lime, juiced

OR

  • 1 cup frozen blueberries

  • 1 banana, frozen

  • 1 ½ tbsp pitaya powder

  • ¼ tsp spirulina

  • 6 oz coconut water

  • 2 tbsp hemp seeds

OR

  • 1 cup frozen peaches

  • 1 cup frozen mango

  • 2 small carrots, peeled and diced

  • ½ of a lemon, juiced

  • 1 tbsp maple syrup

  • ¼ cup hemp seeds

  • ½ tsp turmeric powder


DIRECTIONS

  1. Make sure the frozen ingredients are slightly thawed before blending. To do so, leave the frozen fruit out at room temp for 10-15 minutes, or microwave for 45 seconds to soften quickly.

  2. Add the smoothie ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. If your blender has a tamper, use it to help the blender keep moving. Otherwise, you may have to stop once or twice and scrape down the sides to fully incorporate all ingredients.

  3. Add your favorite toppings.

  4. Enjoy!
